Write Comment• Information needed for Hawgsmoke 2010
Hello guys,
Since my visit to Tucson in 2006 I am a great fan of the A10. I actually came back in 2007 to volunteer at the Pima Air & Space Museum to have the opportunity to take a better look at it.
This year I am planning to come back for Hawgsmoke. As I have to come from far (the Netherlands) and I only will be staying in Boise for a day or two I am looking for some information. Could somebody tell me what are the best days at Hawgsome?
Also I understand that there will only be a static display for the general public and that the organisation is looking at the possibility to have a viewing area to see movement at the airport. $500+ sponsors will be allowed to the Saylor Creek Range to see some action. Does anybody has any experience with that?
By the way I use a 50-500mm lens so I won't need to stand on the runway itself

Also as I will be travelling around I could use some information about military airports in Utah/Nevada with enough movement!
Thanks,
Arthur

Write Comment• Twenty-Five - B 25 Mitchell Bombers in the air...but
They need our HELP!
On April 15, 2010, Twenty-Five B-25 Mitchell Bombers are heading for Grimes Field, Urbana, OH. Their objective, the 86th Reunion of the Doolittle Raiders at the National Museum of the US Air Force.
Can you imagine the Photo/Sound-OP that’s going to be?
Twenty-Five B-25’s taking off, flying over and landing. I’m no Historian, but I think this may be the only time since the end of WWII this many B-25 were together. Of course that’s not counting the B-25’s being flown into the aircraft bone yards.
The USAF have provided new surfacing for the landing strip behind the museum and
The cost of the aircraft fuel, oil, crew housing and ground transportation is a fund raising project by volunteers and friends of the DOOLITTLE TOKYO RAIDERS ASSOCIAION INC., and they need help
I know these are hard times for everyone, but maybe you can donate to the fund by not going out with the boys and tipping a few, by not fueling your aircraft for one weekend of just flying, buy not buying that neat “Thing” that you don’t really need, do it next month, and buy not buying that expensive Valentines Day card and Chocolate Heart for your wife, tell her you donated a gallon of oil in her name instead.
Well maybe that’s not a good idea, you better buy the card and the oil, save the Chocolates for later.
And if you live in the extremes, like Van Burn, ME, Waatch, WA, Imperial Beach, CA or Key West, FL and you can’t come to Ohio, are you wondering just what the benefits will be for you, just think of all the great pictures you’ll be able to enjoy thru your efforts.
All the monies can be returned to the donors if our goal is not reached. The Raiders have a 501c4 non profit status and a special account for this project.
If you can HELP in any way, please contact.

Write Comment• Mid-South Air Show canceled for 2009
We posted a story similar to this earlier in the season, but here it is again...
July 22, 2009 - In spite of a record attendance in 2007, the biennial Mid-South Air Show cannot be held in 2009, Millington officials say.
Mid-South Air Show president Dan Ventre retired from the event this year, along with organizer Brad Smith.
Tracy Williams, Millington Regional Jetport executive director, said a 2009 show was impossible without the two key players.
Airport officials and organizers are hopeful they can revive the show in 2011. The Millington Airport Authority approved a plan Tuesday to request the Blue Angels to perform in 2011.

Write Comment• Detroit APBA Gold Cup
The F-18F Super Hornet East demo team is performing this weekend at the Gold Cup Races near Belle Isle. Sunday for the opening ceremonies there will also be a flyover, not sure what the aircraft will be but I'm pretty sure it will be A-10's from Selfridge.
Here's is the schedule for the races, I'm probably going to go down on Sunday and try to catch the flyover and F-18F demo.

Write Comment• To mark the 100th anniversary of the 'ILA Berlin Air Show' - commemorative coin
From a memo I recieved in my office today....
To mark the 100th anniversary of the 'ILA Berlin Air Show' the German government will be issuing a 10 Euro silver commemorative coin. The obverse of the commemorative coin, bearing the legend '100 Jahre Internationale Luftfahrtausstellung' (100 years of the 'Berlin Air Show'), is the work of the Berlin artist Bodo Broschat and features a three-part image depicting the extensive scope of aviation. 'The frontal view of a modern aircraft approaching the runway represents the dynamic nature of flight', in the opinion of the jury. The panel that chose the winning design also stated that 'The entire range of aviation and space flight is depicted here in a most interesting form, from the earliest days right up to the present'. It encompasses Otto Lilienthal’s flying machines as well as the International Space Station ISS. The coin bears the inscription 'FASZINATION FLIEGEN * TRADITION * INNOVATION *'. The coin is minted in Munich, weight: 18g, diameter: 32.5 mm, material: sterling silver .925, in 'Brilliant uncirculated' quality (approx. 1.6 mi. coins minted.), and with a face value of ten euros, will be available from Deutsche Bundesbank outlets and from many banks and savings banks. The coin can also be purchased in the higher 'Proof-like' quality (approx. 0.2 mi. coins minted.), at a cost of 15 euros from the coin collector’s outlet Verkaufsstelle für Sammlermünzen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (VfS), 92626 Weiden.

June 17, 2009
MUNCIE, Ind. — A lack of money is prompting organizers to call off a central Indiana festival featuring hot-air balloon races and air shows after 14 years.
The Summer Heat Festival had drawn thousands of people each year to the Muncie area. The festival has cost about $100,000 to operate, and Muncie Visitors Bureau director James Mansfield says a rainout at last year’s event wiped out its reserves.Full Story...

Write Comment• Wearing Squadron or Demo Team Patches - Is it ethicial?
I know one aspect of this "hobby" is the collecting of various military squadron and demo team patches. Some of these patches are acquired as a gift from members of the squadron or demo team, some are purchased from the unit at various air shows and some are purchased from third party sources (such as Patchquest or ebay). I collect squadron and demo team patches myself and I see nothing wrong with doing this.
I also know that some people like to affix these patches to jackets or other pieces of clothing, but usually do so with more than one squadron patch affixed to the garment and do it in a way so as to not masquerade as a member of that squadron or demo team. My plan is to frame the patch I acquire along side of an appropriate photograph I took of that squadron or demo team.
Recently, at two different air shows, I have seen a trend that I feel isn't quite ethical. I have seen two different people, wearing a military style fight suits, affix squadron and/or demo team patches to their flight suit in such a manner as to appear to be an official member of that unit (which just so happened to be performing at that show). I know these people and I also know that they had no official connection to the squadron for whose patches they were wearing. To me, I feel this is going a bit too far.
What are the ethical considerations of what we do with the squadron or demo team patches that we acquire? Is it wrong to go out in public and wear these things in a manner such that the general public would confuse us with an official member of that unit? Is it a form of disrespect for the men and women that worked hard to earn the right to display these symbols? Is it legal to wear these patches in this manner?
It was pointed out to me that certain air show announcers like to wear look alike flight suits and also wear patches like I described. Is this fine?
Let's have a rational discussion on this topic, with all views respected.

Write Comment• Your Best Airshow Crossing Shots
Thought it might be interesting to start a topic devoted to the elusive perfect crossing shot. Post some photos of your best crossing shot and include information as to the date and airshow or location where you took the photograph. It could be a photo of one of the major jet teams, or a photo of aviators doing a close cross.
I will start off with a few of my best crossing shots.
The first one is of the Blue Angels, taken at the Tyndal AFB Gulf Coast Salute air show, March 29, 2009

Next is one of the Thunderbirds, taken at the Warner Robins AFB air show, practice day May 1, 2009

Here is one of the Snowbirds, taken at the Snowbirds Over Anderson air show, May 7, 2008

Here is a four way cross by the British Red Arrows at the Quebec City 400th Anniv air show, June 14, 2008

And finally a shot of Skip Stewart and Les Shockley's Shockwave Jet Truck crossing, also at the Quebec City 400th Anniv. air show.
