Question: the vapor comming of the tail of this F-18 is that fuel overflow? This shot was taken during a high negative G manoeuvre.

Sebby,
I do not think that is fuel as we are carrying a minimum amount during the show.  I believe it is simply vapes caused by a little yaw on the negative g maneuver that may be affecting only the left vert stab.
Nice pic.

After viewing all of these great pictures, I really regret not finding any of you guys. I would have loved to have "stolen" some camera settings and then compare my herky, jerky attempts to some of these really smooth shots.

ShowLine, I love the prop action on the C-130. Thanks for sharing camera settings on that picture.

I used to be stationed at Dobbins AFB; across from NAS Atlanta, of course. Not to date myself, but the C5 hadn't even been accepted by the USAF at the time. Man, that was a thousand years ago. I'd love to travel back to my old stomping grounds, but the real world is calling me. I have attached a snapshot of the Lockheed C5 ramp circa 1969.

Bill that is a cool pic of the C-5's.  Dont see many pics of the old white and grey paint any more.

Showline, I wish I would have met you and BillF.  I have some of the same angles on many of my shots.  jderden said he saw you and BillF, but I think I went to get some water.  Some great shots guys.  I can't wait till I can get a big lens.  I dont think I will be getting a 100-400 L, but maybe a Bigma.  I think the wife will just have to live with it.

Sebby, nice shots.

Anyways, I forgot to put up A10 shots.  jderden and Zach (spelled right this time?) were kind enough to take me under thier wing so to speak and lent me a Tamron 70-300 to use during the show on Sunday.  I dont think my XT liked it much.  Some pictures were ok, but many were soft.  The A-10s below are through two different lenses.  The banking shot is with a 28-135 IS that I bought as an all-around lens (only one so far).  The shot with the Hog "dirty" is through the Tamron.  It is not cropped at all, but the first shot is slightly cropped, and to me, looks sharper than the 70-300.  Still, I gotta get a lens.  Roger, I promise I am not making this a "tips and tricks" issue.  Just showing stuff.

And an F-15 for good measure.   Wink

Wow, great shots, guys! And what a show! I wish I could have been there. If I could travel all over the US to go to airshows, I would not miss that one. I'm  Drool just thinking of all the Raptor action I missed. That Heritage Flight also looked totally awesome. All all that condensation!  Drool  Drool  Drool

I have to say, jderden777's picture of the F-15+F-22, and the three artsy static ones (F-16 nose, A-10 side, and the rear end of a couple of big turbofans) really stood out as the kind of picture I try and aim for. Very cool.  Afro  Afro  Afro. And ShowLinePhoto's long-exposure of the loop with fireworks is unlike almost any airshow picture I've ever seen. Absolutely fantastic! I see pictures like those and realize I still have so much to learn.

Nah, it's fuel. "Vapor" - or, rather, condensation - would evaporate back into the air quickly, it would not linger and leave a long trail like that. You can always see fuel coming out of the left vertical (or, um, diagonal?) tail of the Legacy Hornet when it flies inverted for more than just a moment. It doesn't mean you have excess fuel, just that you're getting fuel at the top of the fuel tank / system (which becomes the bottom when you're inverted). Well, it's not that simple, but it's something like that - it usually takes some negative Gs to really shove the fuel all the way up the tail vent. In any case, it's definitely not yaw, since every time I have ever seen a Legacy Hornet do a square loop or other negative-g maneuver, that trail of fuel is there, always coming from the same place, always visible for much longer than vapor would be.

I say this with just a bit of hesitation, though, since the person who does not think it is fuel wrote that "we" are carrying a minimum amount... That "we" is a little scary to disagree with, but I really do think it's fuel. Have you tried inspecting that vent after the flight to see if the inside is wet with fuel? I know it's all the way at the top of the tail, but it would settle the question...
