Just off German Highway 1, past Trier (close to the Belgian / Luxembourg border), the alleged biggest private aircraft collection in Europe is located. The collection has well over 100 aircraft, ranging from very early pre-WWI aircraft to supersonic passenger- and fighterjets, including a Concorde and a Tornado.
They also have a large collection of aircraft engines and other memorabilia. There are a number of halls where aircraft are on the floor, hung from the walls and ceiling and the engines and other items are shown. Most of the passenger aircraft and jets are outside.
The aircraft exposed to the elements all show weathering, some more severe than other, with the MiGs and Sukhois looking particularly bad. Most are ex-East German Airforce. When Germany united, the East-German markings were crudely painted-over and West-German markings were applied. This still shows, only one helicopter had full East-German markings.
We thought it was an interesting museum to spend a couple of hours or more. In that same region, some interesting (former) bases are located: Spangdahlem, Ramstein, Bitburg, Hahn, Büchel, Nörvenich, etc. So you could also see some live aircraft while your there! And it is a nice region to spend a couple of days anyway, as we did.
