I am hiring a 5D with 70-200 usm lens with 1.4 extender for the ASDU. I want a monopod to go with it.

I have no clue about monopods, been looking at manfrotto etc. I aim to be seated at the flighline one day and roaming the next, so I guess I will need a bit of height. As its not my camera, I guess I want a stable base, 3 legs. Send me broke if the thing falls over you see.

I can afford around a hundred bucks. Are they all basically the same, are they really just a stick and the head the important part?

Any advice greatly apreciated.

I use a Vanguard Tracker AP-364 to support my Nikon D200 with a Sigma 50-500mm lens.  I think it's a great product and CHEAPER than the Monfratto.  Good luck with your decison.

Light weight and sturdy.   I have a 50 dollar one and a silly expensive Manfrotto.  They work the same really.  (the cheap one now, after several years) slips a bit.

Put a decent ball head on it.

I use it with my 500 constantly.  Well worth it.  (but it does take getting used to when shooting airplanes.)
