Base Announces Summer Air Show

by 127th Wing Public Affairs

1/8/2009 - Jan. 8, 2009 -- SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, MICH.-- Selfridge Air National Guard Base will host the USAF Thunderbirds and highlight military technology during its next Air Show and Open House scheduled for August 22 and 23, 2009, bringing together the people, aircraft, and military equipment from across service branches.

With a focus on the advancement of military technology, the base will exhibit displays from hybrid-vehicle technology to robotics to training simulators which have improved military operations to their current standards and fostered improvements in warfighter support. NASA has committed several displays to be set up in the field for participants to explore.

"We're very excited to be bringing back the Thunderbirds this year to an event that brings out so many hundreds of people in our community to see what we do right here at Selfridge," said Major Jim Rossi, the 2009 Air Show Director. The last time the Thunderbirds appeared at the base was 2003. "With a usual count of about 150,000 people for the event weekend, we expect this show to bring upwards of 200,000 people or more to the base to see what we do for our country on a daily basis."

The Air Show will showcase personnel and modern and future military aircraft and hardware that are currently contributing towards the global war on terror. Besides the Air Force's premier demonstration team, acts currently committed to the show include all aircraft stationed at Selfridge ANG Base such as the Air Guard's A-10 "Warthogs" and KC-135 "Stratotankers", the Coast Guard's HH-65 "Dolphin" helicopters, the Army National Guard's CH-47 "Chinook" helicopters. Air Show favorites which have also committed include the MIG-17 "Fresco", T-1, F-104 Starfighters, T-6 Texans, B-25 Mitchell, C-47 - Skytrain, MIG-21 "Fishbed", Greg Poe (Fagen Oil) MX-2, Brett Hunter, Gene Soucy and Wingwalker, Mike Wiscus (Lucas Oil) Pitts, Oregon Aero Skydancer and Skywriter, and static displays of a variety of aircraft. Orange County Chopper has also signed on to participate. Aerial acts and static display aircraft and other equipment are still committing to the show and this list continues to grow.

For more information regarding sponsorship opportunities, availability to showcase local technologically advanced equipment, and updates to the upcoming the Selfridge Air Show,  visit the Air Show site at www.selfridgeairshow.org.

Also for those of you who take the back way by means of Bridgeview Bridge to get to North River Road, Bridgeview Bridge is closed as of last week 2/7/09 until the middle of 11/09 for bridge re-construction. There is another way in, well at least there was for the 07 show. Take the 21 Mile Rd exit off of 94 and make a right (east) down to Jefferson, make a right (south) and take that into the base main entrance. Again not sure if this route will be open, as there have been numerous updates to the bases security and entrances. I will try and email my contact at Selfridge and find out.

Interesting to see the Thunderbirds are going to returning, especially after a base vehicle crashed into one of their jets a number of years ago...

Sounds like a powerful civilian lineup, even with a lineup "highlighting military technology."   Undecided

Hopefully they can get a Navy Tac Demo and an ACC Tac Demo at the very least.

I'm fairly sure they will get an ACC demo TAC demo. It doesn't seem like a very busy weekend as far as other shows competing for TAC demos. I am also hoping for a Navy Demo as well.

Sounds like a powerful civilian lineup, even with a lineup "highlighting military technology."   :-

But this civilian line-up is pretty good, especially if you look at the above article and how it mentions the MiG-17, MiG-21, Starfighters (although not confirmed on their schedule), C-47, B-25. So yes a strong civilian line-up, but I love some of the vintage aircraft they have lined-up that are under the "civilian" banner. Plus here's hoping for a Collings Foundation F-4 and/or TA-4 Wink

This show does have a static display....doesn't mean military technology will soley be highlighted in the air. Roll Eyes

Agreed.  The static display at the 2007 Selfridge show was pretty good.

Hehe, although when I think of military technology the MiG-17 and the F-104 do not come mind.  I tend to think along the lines of the F-22 and the Super Hornet.   Evil

I'd be happy with the Super Hornet and the F-15E. I know Selfridge won't get the F-16 TAC and most likely won't get the F-22 because the ACC likes to "spread the wealth".

I hope that MiG-21 is flyable, that would be some site! Afro

If it's Will Ward's Mig-21 then it will most likely be flying at the show. Last time it was at Selfridge he couldn't fly it at the show because he hadn't finished all the stuff with the FAA. Now that it has all been taken care of he can fly it at shows. He will also be at Thunder Over Michigan this year flying the Mig-21 with the Collings Foundation F-4.

I noticed in the air show release above it says A-10's and not F-16's.  Does anyone know if Selfridge has already transitioned to Warthogs, based on the BRAC recommendations?

Thanks

Yes, all the F-16s have left Selfridge and are gone. The C-130s are also gone.

Now all Selfridge has are KC-135s and A-10s.

Yea the last F-16 left in December. By the time June rolls around they will have 24 A-10's and 12 KC-135R's. Plus the USCG HH-65's, the 3 Chinooks they just gained, and the new Border Patrol Aviation wing with lear jets, blackhawks and some other helos. Of course they are still missing the sound of freedrom though  Cry

That MiG-21 was not Will Wards. It's Paul van den Heuvel, Based out of DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport.

Will Wards new MiG-21 is here...
