Here's the weather poop, straight from the National Weather Service's Norfolk reporting center. The historic average High and Low temperatures for the 17th and 18th of October is 69F/20C and 60F/15C. The record high is 87F/30C (1925) and the record low is 34F/1C (1977). Norfolk averages 0.11" of precipitation over those two days, as opposed to 0.14 - 0.13" through September. While tropical weather season does continue through the month of October, it is a MUCH less active month than September tends to be. From 1851 through 2004 a total of 43 major hurricanes have struck the eastern US during September (the highest month of activity), that number lowers to 17 in October with only a single major storm striking the state of Virginia according to the National Hurricane Center.

For myself, I've got no problem with a sunny 65 degree day. I've been to shows that were a lot colder, and a lot hotter.

oh man!  I am thinking about coming to this show for my first time ever next year and no twilight show or Beach Blast?  Oh well...I'll hopefully still get to come!  I can finally get buddy passes for airline tickets next year so I hope to be able to make it to more shows.

After standing on the beach in the cold 30-40mph winds of 08, all I wanted was a nice warm calm day for the 09 beach blast. And now there will be no beach blast???  That's a real downer for me and might play a role in my decision to take the 4 hour trip. Unless of course Corky can shock and awe me and make my decision easier  Afro

i think Corky stated earlier why there is no beach blast or night show.. and went something along these lines..the weather is too much to gamble with that time of year.  if it is cold, no one will show up (besides us of course)..

i wish there was a show too, but lets be happy with the placement this year..i think October will produce the best light for our photos..plus rooms will be cheaper.  Afro

plus..i finally get time to relax after a show. and see the town..  every year is a non stop festival..this year will be a nice change..but i hope we resume the regular oceana next year  Smiley

He explained it on ASB, but the bottom line is the weather is too cold and unpredictable.

I know that the travelers who come from all over for this show might be a little disappointed, but they will have time to have a cold one and prepare for the next day. If you don't come, you might miss out on one of the best military airshows. Wink  I'm not losing faith yet.

It's unfortunate the Edwards AFB Show will be the same weekend. Those who do travel quite a way will be torn between the shows.

I was thinking about that. I had a look at flight times and there is a connection(american airlines) from Norfolk via Dallas FW to LAX at 6:20PM , a quick snooze in L A and drive off to Edwards for the sunday show. Just might make it or is it alittle to optemistic  ?

Appreciate all the comments and support for what promises to be a very different show for us.  While it may be a different feel and series of events, I also know that no one will be disappointed.

Okey doke.  So what's new?  Well, I'm starting to dialogue with some city folks about the potential for something to replace the Beach Blast.  Nothing even remotely firmed up yet but I sense that the folks I'm working with want to do SOMETHING.  If there's a pre-existing event that is trying to draw a crowd, I can throw the Blue Angels at 'em and REALLY draw a crowd.  Win-win for everyone, yes?

As to the O'Club gig, still working that one too.  At every base I'VE been stationed at (yeah, both of 'em, Miramar and here), air show Friday night is a huge O'Club night.  That's the way I was raised and that's the way it shall be.  It's a moral imperative, basically (maybe immoral?).  That said, I just don't know yet how it's going to look/work/operate.  It's in the hopper for consideration though.  Details to follow.........when I get some!

I'll keep everyone in the loop as things develop.

Cheers,
Corky
