One of the original Flying Wing prototypes... ...I believe this one is based out of Chino.

Well, YEAH... How many restored Northrop flying wings are there?

Yeah, it was a nice day, Sagar and I wandered around the airport, shot everything in sight, Sagar went up on a scissors-lift thing and was forgotten there for hours by the operators (  Grin  Grin  Grin ... um, I mean  Undecided ), the weather cleared just as I got there, we met a bunch of nice folks like the Firecat pilot and some guys from Chino... Good times. Pics soon.

I believe four were built. The Chino one is 1 of 2 in existence.

Are there any more that are still flyable? I guess there might be, but I don't think I've seen recent pictures of another one (except the N-1 at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, which I don't think they fly).

I do know Northrop made a whole bunch of flying wings in the 40s, a few of each of their models, leading up to the B-35 and B-49. (Ooh, now THAT's what someone needs to restore and fly at airshows!)

I think Bernardo meant in addition to the Y-9M.  When Northrop was going through the development stages, they went through 9 variations of the fuselage...er, wing before they nailed the flight characteristics leading to the YB-49...hence the Y-9M.  Unfortunately, Northrop had a history of destroying each version as the new ones took shape.  That's why there are no YB-49's.  When Northrop lost the contract, they had them destroyed.

Yeah, Tim told me today that the B-35s and 49s were destroyed. I do have a small book on the Northrop flying wings (N-1M, N-9M, P-56, MX-324/334, P-79, JB-1, X-4, and the bombers), but I do not remember it mentioning this sad detail.

What I meant by "Are there any more that are still flyable?" was, yes, in addition to the N-9M. I know there aren't any more in the air. I said that in response to "I believe this one is based out of Chino", and I meant "Well yeah, Chino's is the only one".

G'night.

The folks at PCAM never fail to pull together a smooth running, constantly entertaining show. Here's a few from Sunday's action.

It was nice to meet Bernardo and Roger, good to see Sagar and Gar again.

Oh, man! Why didn't you let us know? I don't think we've met yet (maybe very briefly at Nellis?).

An Oceana trip is looking more and more likely for me...

I had a long day on Saturday, not sure if I could really drive up from San Jose.
It's hard to believe that we have only 3 weekends to go before Oceana.  I'll see you soon for sure  Cool
