Wings over Moffett '99

6-19/20-1999

Moffett Field - CA - USA

The 35th annual West Coast Antique Fly-in and Air Show was held at Moffett Field on Father's Day Weekend, June 1999. Entertaining the public were many famous performers, such as Sean Tucker in his highly modified Pitts Special, Wayne Handley in his Turbo Raven and Eddie Andreini with his Super Stearman. Maj. Jeff Lowery, team commander of the Air Force's West Coast A-10 Demonstration Team of the 355th Air Combat Wing, showed off the Warthog's capabilities.

Additionally, NASA's 747 that transports the space shuttle was open for public display. Among the warbirds were an AT-6 and a few P-51s as well as various fighters from NAS Lemoore, NSAWC Fallon, NAS Point Mugu, and MCAS Miramar. This was the first air show at Moffett Field since "The Last Air Show" the Navy held in Oct. 1992 that featured the USN Blue Angels.

This air show was also a civilian fly-in. I remember NUQ tower was very busy that weekend.

The highlight of the show for my buddy Lee and I.

This F-14D came in on the Friday before the show about 20:45/PST. We had tracked only a flashing red light out in the distance and thought it was a civilian landing for the fly-in, but this red light kept approaching Moffett faster and faster. Once he hit mid-field the pilot went into full AFTER BURNER  Cheesy and we were able to see the shock diamonds as well. He made right closed traffic for the 32s and landed. We were so stoked to say the least. We told the pilot we enjoyed his overhead approached, and he told us "We have been getting a lot of positive feedback on that". Good memories!

Some various F-18s on the NASA ramp. The fighters were all parked on the NASA ramp for this show.

VMFA (AW) 121 "Green Knights" doing a flyover then followed by a pair of VMFA-314 "Black Knights" heading back to MCAS Miramar. These were taken on Sunday 6/21/99.

Great stuff Jeff! Thanks for taking the time to post them and for the walk down memory lane. I was there at that show and it was cool seeing the planes there once again.

Cheers!

Thanks Sagar for your nice comments. It was a great pleasure to get back out to Moffett after the 7 years of no airshows in the '90s.
