I have been resizing my pictures to 750 to post on Fence Check from my 10 megapixel Canon Rebel Xti.  Unfortunately this gives the photos less than 100 kilobytes which hurts my image quality when viewed at this size.  Is there a way I can keep the image size at 750 and boost the kilobytes to improve image quality when viewed on this site.

Thanks for the help.

Mike, how are you resizing and with what program?

I always use the save for web feature in photoshop and adjust the quality slider so that it just sneaks under 200kb.

it's very easy to get photos down to 100kb for posting here with no loss of quality - like Ironfan says, depends what you are using to get the result

I'm amazed that so many hotlinked images are over 500kb with 50% of the photo blue sky (= almost no kb size) -- it slows my viewing down so much I mostly skip over waiting for them to load.

I use a program called ArcSoft Photo Studio which came with my Dell computer several years ago.  I change the image size to 750 pixels in width.  The resolution is set to 200 dpi.  The quality is set to best.  This gives me under 100 kilobytes.  I would like to get as close to 200 as I could.  I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 installed but I am so used to using the other program I don't use Photoshop.

Followed Nathans advice.

First picture is from ArcSoft.  Second is from Photoshop using the "Save for Web" feature as close to 200 as I could get.

Comments??  I definately like the second one best.  Thanx Nathan, Fence Check in action Afro

When using Save for Web, you can click on the little arrow pointing to the right in the quality-box. You then get a ruler and when you slide the little button over the ruler, below the RH preview, it will tell you exactly how many kB you end up with the moment you release the slide-button, so you can get as close to 200kB as you want. If the pic has much detail and you are down in the 60 - 80% it might make steps of up to 15kB though.

Using Save for Web also deletes the EXIF-data by the way. If you use the Save As function, you will retain EXIF-data but the "steps" (12 in total) to control the compression are larger. Still, if you use the preview-feature, it will tell you how many kB you end up with.

See examples below...
