Fini flights also happen when a flyer leaves a squadron. Most sqaudrons do still hose down the pilot once he/she is out of the cockpit. Even at Ellsworth. In the winter. With the wind. While it's snowing.

It was rough...

...the champagne helped though.

I'm new to the website, but interestingly enough, I've had some time inside this aircraft.  I was assigned to Elmendorf AFB, AK 1976-1979, working in the Transient Alert Shop. The aircraft was flown over to Elmendorf when the Air Force, State of Alaska or some other government entity had something oversize to move.  They would land at Elmendorf for fuel, seeing the cost of fuel was covered by the contract, load what ever was supposed to be moved and fly out.  While loading, they would keep #4 engine running so they wouldn't have to use the APU's in the gear sponsons.  They would only start those when they had to, as the availability of spares was sorta limited.  I remember one time, they were loading a Cat into the cargo hold, and the nose was about 8 feet above the ground and lowered as the Cat was overcentered into the bay.  No aft milk stools or supports were used, although they were inside the airplane.  I never realized how much I wish I had taken photos of those days.

When an engine is lost on a twin engine aircraft, the other will take you all the way to the crash site.
