First of all, GREAT PIX from you guys!!!
For those of you who suffered through the Aviation Nation webcast, I was right there with you. It was especially hard for me, as I've been the Director of Media Productions for Aviation Nation Foundation since the beginning. The powers-the-be at the Foundation decided they could do it without the team that pulled it off last year. I guess we saw the result of that.
Now, I will give production team some slack, in that they were put into an almost impossible situation. Yes, they had cameras, and operators, and a director, but no one knew what was going to happen next, and thus could only react to what was going on in the sky. That was not only obvious to those of us watching at home, but was confirmed by many there on the ground watching them.
Yes, they did a webcast, and yes we were able to watch it right here at home. But the quality of the video, when we had it, was poor, and the camera work and directing was marginal at best. When you've never done this before, and you're not used to this type of event, you can't be expected to have a good production the first time out. My productions are never perfect, but I do know what's coming next, and I have many other tools to entertain and inform the viewers. Watching the show, as well as the chat, I am not alone in my thoughts.
This may sound like "sour grapes", but nothing could be farther from the truth. My frustration comes from the desire to put Nellis AFB, and the air show industry in the best light possible. That didn't happen last weekend. Those that attended the show in Vegas saw a great air show. Those of us at home did not.
Kudos to Gordon and Heidi for another great job. Julie, I missed working with you this year. To Chuck Ramey and Bob Jones, congratulations!
Finally, a reminder that the 2007 Aviation Nation DVD is still available at the Aviation Nation website. Also, look for my team to be back in place in 2009 at other air shows during the season, as LiveAirShowTV kicks off!
See you at ICAS!
