Ok so I've been shooting in RAW for a little bit and the pics look great while I'm editing before I convert them to jpegs. Once I save a jpeg the edges look wavy. I know that by saving to a jpeg it is downsampling the photo but how do you guys do it? I just hit save and then save it at the highest level I can and it still turns out kind of ehhh.
Heres an example of the wavy...in the RAW viewer its edges of the wings were straight but when I tunred it to a jpeg it got wavy (might not look as bad since its small).
I'm using CS3 by the way.

                      Thanks for your help

Don't see anything wrong with that shot, no wavy edges.

Can you tell us the exact steps you take in photoshop?

hi David,

it could be it looks wavy after excessive sharpening. Could that be your problem?

Well.....I open the picture and then do the basic, tone curves, detail (I try not to oversharpen  Grin although I am still a rookie so its possible I do)  then I usually save it as a JPEG quality 10 maximum. I then close the picture in RAW and then open up the JPEG format. I actually noticed it only looks rough when I open up the JPEG in PS (?!) and when I open it in picture viewer outside of PS it looks fine.....so I not quite sure why that is.....ohh well it looks fine when I use it for anything else.  Maybe its just me  Cheesy.

                Thanks

One thing to keep in mind is that different programs interpret pictures differently.  You may have a picture look just fine in one, and crap in another.  This is especially true if you are opening pictures at something other than their native resolution.  For instance PS has the option to show pictures at their actual size, or to fit the screen, or various other sizes.  If you are taking a picture that is too large to fit in the PS window and then resizing it to fit the window, you will definetely see the jaggies you are refering to.  Try opening a pic in PS and resize it to "actual pixels" and then look at it and see.

That sounds about it........
What size do you guys edit pictures at?.....I usually use fit to screen (except when sharpening I use at least 100% sometimes more).

Depends, for FC and my own site I finish tem at 800 X 533 @ 300 dpi.
For desktops, I finish them at 1200 X 1000.

BTW, sharpening should always be done and more importantly judged @ 100%. Not less, not more.

Try these steps
adjust your curves, contrast and such.
Resize your image and then sharpen last before saving.

Sharpen your image according to your size. An 8x12 @ 300 DPI won't sharpen the same if it's a 500 x 300 @ 72 DPI.

David,

One thing that I've noticed about having a wavy appearance also depends on whether or not you're looking at the image at 100%. If you're not, type in the 100, and I can pretty much guarantee the waves will go away...

It's happened to me before as well, and that's what I found to be the fix... Afro
