One of the shows I might attend this year.
I am surprised to see that its only one day though.

Andre:

I too was surprised to see that it is only a one day show. I had a great time at this show last year, Dave Schultz & Co. put on a fantastic event! Definitely one worth attending, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it this year.

Undecided

Okay, here it is, another year, and I have even more unnecessary restrictions on my airshow enjoyment.  I was perusing the FAQ's for my favorite airshow at Tyndall AFB, and it says that "walkie-talkie's" are not allowed.   Two questions come to mind.  One, does Security Forces Officer Smith know a BR-330T high-speed low-drag radio spectrum receiver from a Radio Shack family talkie?  And two, what devious undertaking was disrupted to prompt this rule in the first place?  Someone in the Air Force wrote this rule, and he was prompted by who knows what kind of incident?  Perhaps a squad of crack scanner wielding raiders were foiled attempting to hear the ATIS information within 50 feet of gate 1 or something at last years show?  Anyway, I know many of us  fencecheckers' photography budget is closely rivaled by our scanner budget.  My last question is, will Schultz Airshows clear this mess up (if it is indeed a mess) before I am forced to sit on my tailgate in the parking lot and listen to my perfectly legal scanner?

I'll await the airboss' response to my e-mail.

Regardless, hope to see y'all at the home of Raptor training in March!

Please help me here... Why would you need a walkie-talkie at an airshow? A simple cell phone would cure your need to talk to another and some cell phones have talkie capability, which would be beyond the scope of a "typical" hand held walkie-talkie. I would suggest meeting your buddies before the airshow - making sound meeting plans and all should work well. Bothering an "airboss" who has obviously better things to do than answer such an inquiry that is well documented in the FAQ (thats why its there) - its a rule you will likely have to live with.

I don't believe the point of the post was the need for a walkie-talkie. Rather it is having a scanner confused for a walkie-talkie.

I will admit that was somewhat of a rant.  I just find it silly to stop someone from bringing in a scanner.  Maybe they are afraid of portable radio's interfering with avionics or something like that?

Thanks, Liza for the clarification, you were dead on.  Grin

Huh I dont know what the deal is, but ive never had a issue with taking my scanner to airshow or base visits ever.  Ive been questioned about it when i go visit around scott afb, they look at it and listen to it and see its no harm.  Some kind of incident must have happened for "walkie-talkies" to be banned.  If it was a real issue, maybe they should call it a scanner instead of a walkie talkie... My main worry is that the SP's won't know a scanner from a walkie-talkie and simply default to "I don't care what it's called it's not allowed!"
Then all of us scanner nuts will be improperly denied of our comms.

I will just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Hopefully the F-22's will be burning it up on Friday!  It will be worth it simply to listen from the bay!

I asked Max if the F-22 Demo Team would be here at Tyndall or if the local squadron would handle the relatively tame fly bys. He said the Demo Team would definitely be here.

In response to my asking if he would be allowed to unleash the beast, he replied, "You bet.  Should be one of the first shows I do it at.  Nothing too crazy, but more than you saw last year.  A lot more!"  Cool

Man that is awesome to hear.  I've been waiting to see the Raptor in action for years.  I wonder if the demo team will have merchandise for sale?  Do they even have a unit symbol/patch yet?

Also, for anyone interested, the Tyndall PAO stated to me that scanners will be welcome, and that only transmitting radios are to be disallowed.  My previous fears were overreaction,  So bring your scanners and enjoy!

Thanks Bill for the Intel!

Bill, you are absolutely...Da' Man!!!

That patch is perfect...A vividly detailed F-22 overlaying the Old Glory.  This is exemplary of the aircraft itself: simple, clean, deadly and projecting freedom.

Can't wait to "buy the T-Shirt!" Tongue

See Y'all!
